3rd Party Interfaces

The creation and deployment of interfaces are a central part of Practice Partner’s development and implementation process. Practice Partner offers both standardized interfaces and custom interfaces in both real-time and batch modes, depending on the needs of the customer. Practice Partner is capable of providing in-bound, out-bound, and bi-directional interfaces. Practice Partner has developed a specialized interface team and can build virtually any type of interface using industry-accepted data formats such as HL7 or ASCII. Practice Partner has successfully developed and deployed interfaces to all of the major clinical reference labs, such as Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp; the major practice management systems, such as Medical Manager and IDX; hospital systems, such as Cerner and MediTech; radiology systems; and many other specialized systems.

There are a variety of third-party products (software and hardware), not made or sold by Practice Partner that may become a part of your overall project. Unless otherwise specified within the project plan, your Practice Partner project manager does not train or configure any products that are not purchased directly from Practice Partner. Therefore, you should make provisions to receive appropriate training or configuration instruction from the vendor from whom you purchase the third-party product. Below are some examples of third-party products.

  • Scanning Devices and Related Software – Scanners are devices used to convert paper documents (such as discharge summaries, pathology reports, and other patient related documents) into an electronic format, which then allows them to be stored within a patient’s electronic medical record. Scanners are an essential component of a paperless EHR project. As noted above, it will be the responsibility of the practice to purchase, set-up and configure the hardware and software within the scanning device so that you are able to create electronic documents that can be attached to a patient’s electronic medical record.

Your Practice Partner project manager or trainer will not be prepared to install, train or troubleshoot any scanner or scanning software for you. You will need to make sure that your staff has a good understanding of how to use the scanner and the software you choose to scan your images. We will provide you with the appropriate specifications for both scanners and file types that are required by Practice Partner and as appropriate make recommendations about third-party software (including optical character recognition software and image indexing software). Additionally, once you have created the electronic file of the paper document, we will train you on how to attach that file to a particular patient’s electronic medical record (as well as documentation that describes how to do this).

  • Fax Servers – Fax servers enable your office to fax directly from your computer. This is not a Practice Partner requirement; however, it can greatly increase the efficiency of your office. Practice Partner does not install or configure fax servers, therefore, your project manager or trainer will not be prepared to install, configure or train you on how to use the fax server software you may have purchased. Your staff will need to gain that training prior to the Practice Partner user training. This will require that the server be installed and in place prior to training as well. Your trainer will simply show your staff where to find the fax option when printing prescriptions. The two primary fax server systems are the Windows 2003 Fax Server and Zetafax which are both explained in the Add-On Products section above.
  • Fine Print – Fine Print is the name of specialized software that can be used in conjunction with your fax server to enable you to embed a copy of your signature on each of your prescriptions. If you have purchased this software, you will need to have the software configured and know how to use it prior to the training if you would like it included in the Practice Partner training of faxing/printing prescriptions. While the Practice Partner application has the capability to imbed signatures in places such as prescriptions, letters and progress notes, Fine Print has a more robust set of features and options.
  • RemoteScan – A third party utility allows our ASP server to control their scanner. With Remote Scan a practice can open Practice Partner’s Zoom feature and scan efficiently over the ASP’s internet connection.
